What are we going to do about it?
Sorry for the Google Translate Link. An easy alternative is much appreciated.
Edit: thanks to @Xamrica@lemmy.dbzer0.com for this translation alternative: https://translate.kagi.com/translate/https://www.xataka.com/servicios/foros-internet-estan-desapareciendo-porque-ahora-todo-reddit-discord-eso-preocupante
depends on which forums, niche forums are still there like medical, joining the services, even reddit-evasion/advertising. news-type forums like lemmy and others are probably few and far between. before reddit, it was Y’A and ebaum, a little of yelp and QOURA too. i was on a drugs reaction forum, and a med forum for a while(because i suspected had some conditions going on that is undiagnosed).
Y/A was hilarious and was like reddit but unfiltered, since theres no moderation, but just reporting.
They’re disappearing because they’ve been invaded by corporate interests, political manoeuvring and activism. Real people just want to talk with real people about shit without thousands of busy bodies combing over their messages for opportunities to exploit them somehow.
💯 This
Yup, want it astroturfed to sell stuff to us and sway our opinions … not just that they also want to use our speech to trained their LLMs to take our jobs without our consent. Actually, even if you explicitly state otherwise they’ll do it all anyways.
Yeah, same here. This unfortunately
I guess Lemmy as a federalized platform mitigates a lot of the problems (mainly all subreddits being at the mercy of one company) addressed in this article.
Definitely!
I feel like Lemmy is a worthwhile future for forums and more.
There is a big drawback tho: It is far more likely that a sub here simply stops existing. Everything everyone did there is simply gone. I have had that happen with several classical forums before, but they usually lasted more than a decade. Also, it is not exactly easy to find stuff written here, so it is way too fenced off. If I write a guide how to fix X, how would anyone find it?
Yeah, additionally if a post is removed or deleted for any reason, all of the comments of that post are also nuked and all of that information is lost.
I’m telling anyone that’s listening,
the Fediverse, is the new forums. Any forum sites out their from the past, should join the Fediverse, it’s the only way for them to stay relevant. Google isn’t it anymore, you have to be on social media, or no one will know you exist. (not talking about those who may already know, but new potential users)
Discord simply feels like the evolution of IRC to me - the part where it sucks is being corporate owned and all the fuckery that comes with that. An alternative to irc that incorporates voice, forums, etc, and isn’t named Ventrillo or Teamspeak (🤢) would be a viable alternative. Maybe this exists. But, it would take something like the latest Reddit exodus for anyone to switch, because discord is extremely entrenched across many platforms.
Discord reminds me they are introducing ads to their mobile platform right?
As for the article, one of the reasons for the demise could be that instead of signing up on dozens different forums, users now just do it on Reddit. I don’t appreciate it, because Reddit’s conversations only focus on newer active threads and even if one replies to older ones, it does NOT bump them. This isn’t the case with forums, where usually you can respond to old conversations and it gets bumped up.
I wish matrix could replace discord.
God I hate to squirt so much.
