PM says he’s available to talk if the president shows respect for Canada’s sovereignty

Prime Minister Mark Carney says he still hasn’t spoken U.S. President Donald Trump since taking office last week, implying the president is waiting for the results of the federal election — whoever that may be after April 28.

Carney, who was sworn in as prime minister 10 days ago, told reporters Monday he’s willing to speak to Trump, if the president shows respect for Canada.

“I’m available for a call, but we’re going to talk on our terms. As a sovereign country — not as what he pretends we are — and on a comprehensive deal,” said Carney during a campaign stop in Gander, N.L., where he leaned heavily on Canadian patriotism.

In the latest sign of the deteriorating relationship between the two once close allies, Carney’s team said Trump hasn’t called Carney to congratulate him on becoming prime minister, and hasn’t posted anything online either.

Well there’s your reason. Trump has no intention of respect towards anyone.

Carney already knows where Trump stands, so it’s really just pointless even speaking to him right now.

Carney is not a stupid man. He knows that Spraytan will not call him.

In the days of the original round of tariffs; our then-PM acted with some degree of panic, flooding Washington and Florida with attempts to negotiate and make an agreement.

Carney is saying that has ended. We aren’t pursuing them, we aren’t playing this game anymore.

Until they respect our sovereignty we will refuse to deal with them. They rip up treaties? Fine. Block trade? Fine. We can respond with policy actions and don’t need to discuss it with them.

If the Americans want to talk about how to stop the trade war escalation or fucking anything else, they permanently cease the 51st state and invasion threats. Period.

You are not dealing with a fool.

What makes you think he thinks Trump is going to call him? He was just asked a question by the press.

If Trump never calls what does it matter? The last PM visited the palace in Florida and got mocked . Better to demand respect.

PMs are always technically appointed, but are chosen based on a vote by Members of Parliament. But also we just kicked off a general election yesterday, so *shrug*.

It’s basically the same system as England, it’s based on it so yeah.

We elect a party to power, then that party appoints ministers from the elected people and normally the appointed Prime Minister is the leader of the winning party.

In this case, the last PM stepped down and in doing so, the House of Commons was “put on hold” while the party elected a new leader. The Governor of Canada then appointed that new leader as PM so he can assure the transition but he needed to trigger election before the House of Commons work resumed which was today.

So now we get a snap election of 36 days to appoint our new government but in the meantime, Marc Carney is the acting Prime Minister.

Oh it’s not just you. Worst thing is we’ve got a first past the post system so far from proportional…

There’s a lot of movement right now to bring proportional representation and it’s been on and off an election promise that’s never been kept but I think it’s still very early and I’m not holding my breath that we’re gonna get it this cycle…

It’s diplomatic posturing. He gets to make a point about Canadian sovereignty and stress that the ball is still in Trump’s court.
