Im joining in on the reddit ditching thing, and was kinda worried at first that i wouldnt be able to like use it the way i did reddit as it feels like a whole new place, but after engaging with posts and people and actually being a part of lemmy rather than being lurk mode all the time i was pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to become a member of the community, theres a reasonable amount of subs (or whatever the other word for em is) that fit my interests, enough linux content and shitposting for my liking, and the overall random posts made by people equally fed up with Leddit. (also i admit i used reddit a little cus there was this post on the fedora sub showing how to fix a sound issue i been having after a recent update)

I dont think its very political (whatever that means). The founders have political views that may not be so common in the west, but it doesnt mean anything for you personally. You can choose exactly what communities you want to follow and read about anyway. They are not forcing their beliefs on anyone.

This is why the choice of instance is mostly a matter of performance and trust that the admins behind it know what they are doing.

Lemmy.ml is the most popular instance and it will of course be bombarded with new users when they come, so its good to create accounts on a few other instances as well. This is the point of being distributed. Im reading and writing this from my own instance: https://lemmy.today. And I think thats just fantastic, that we can do that.

Take a look at https://join-lemmy.org/instances for the full list and brief descriptions. I’ve ended up making accounts on three different instances (also started out on lemmy.ml because that’s what all the reddit posts were pointing at), but I think I’m going to like this one (mander.xyz) because it has a lot of science-related communities.

Keep in mind these communities can be viewed from ANY lemmy instance, you just have to connect to them (usualy just by searching in the community search bar). I just chose my instance based on the general type of communities present here. I was going to jump on beehaw (and in fact did create an account there) but felt that Mander was a better fit for like-minded people to myself.

I’m on Beehaw and so far it’s been a pretty chill place. They encourage “Be nice” and “safe space” without coming across as in your face with any actual political ideology.

Your instance is really just a point of entry. In the end people will probably follow the communities which are the largest and in their language, regardless of the instances hosting it. And your instance is probably the one hosting the largest communities anyway.

edit: oops, my bad, lemmy.ml had federated with lemmygrad, which is filled with russian shills, so yeah, we have to think about it, and maybe pick a different instance or start a brand new one. I don’t want to spend more time explaining why Ukraine doesn’t belong to Russia. Let them lose the war and figure it out by themselves.

You should not focus too much on the political aspect. So far there are a lot of russians around, but we will outnumber them, so it’s not a priority.

Those Russians, they sure do seem to be everywhere! Tell me, even if there were a lot of Russians – which I don’t think is actually true – what would your problem be with that?

If we take as an axiom, as many in the west regularly do, that the Russian government is fundamentally undemocratic and disconnected from the will of its people, then what worry should we have about Russians, who themselves thereby probably aren’t interested in advancing the interests of their government? Or do you believe that the accounts you don’t agree with are paid agents on this tiny website? That would be very unreasonable of me to assume as a belief you hold, but I am struggling to infer another one. Could you help me to understand?

That’s the spirit! I don’t think there are many Russians here, but if there are any, I hope you get some people to queue with!

You think that it’s equivalent to saying the Earth is flat to wonder about the logic of complaining about “Russians” on this website? I was pretty careful about my inferences, though I invited you to show me my error and still would be interested to see where my mistake was!

@GarbageShootAlt2@lemmy.ml World News@lemmy.ml China tightens access to Tiananmen Square while 32 are detained in Hong Kong

10,000 is absurd and it’s a disgrace that the absolute bullshit reporting that some hack journos gave at the time is still treated credibly. Do you think there were machine guns on roofs and tanks deliberately pulping bodies, too?

And this is your first post, of a 2 days old account

Go shill to someone else. You think people are naive?

Apparently they are naive, since that claim that the death toll was 10,000 was refuted even by the person who first gave it down to a fraction of what it was, which brings it still closer, but still far above, other estimates even from other western journalists.

Also I think calling me a “shill” is breaking the rules, though I hope your comment stays up to demonstrate that you believed what you posted to be a home run.
