Speaking Monday at a mining convention in downtown Toronto, Ontario Premier Doug Ford doubled down on threats to cut electricity exports to U.S. border states if the tariffs go through.
This needs to be placed everywhere.
And as a long term goal, let’s get proportional representation: !fairvote@lemmy.ca. We are trying to restore control of government back to the people!
You know, everyone here is basically saying Ford is pro-Trump and this is fake, but I’d like to point out he has gotten along really well with Trudeau behind closed doors, and he has a fresh mandate that would allow him to not say this if he wanted. He’s a transphobe IIRC and definitely a blowhard, but maybe he’s on the right side this time.
I am not a Ford fan, but I do trust his motives. He doesn’t want the US to destroy us because he wants to continue enriching himself and his friends. Trade wars are bad for capitalism. He is a capitalist. Free trade is good at making people rich. Trade wars are not.
So no, I don’t think Ford is pro-Trump. He’s pro-profit and when Trump was all about business, he supported some of what Trump said, now that Trump has shown he is anti-business, Ford is against him.
There is no doubt in my mind.
I hope this actually happens.
Ford is a Trump supporter. Republican wannabe. He’s just playing along. We’re watching WWE kayfabe.
We’re as fucked as the Americans are. Maybe more. At least the 75 million who bothered to vote Democrat who don’t want any of this. One third of them know what’s going on. Meanwhile Ontario is still voting on pointless traditional small-c versus small-l partisan issues.
I find myself uninvested in all this seeing how scripted it is. It’s distraction. I mean it’s been the Trump era MO for 10 years. Conservatives here love it. They’ve been cribbing notes. Why aren’t more people seeing it this way. The bluster. The table pounding. It’s all an act.
Whatever the bigger picture ends up being in this great big geopolitical realignment. Canadians are in for very rude awakenings whenever they start realizing it isn’t anymore about nebulous partisan ideologies but fundamental shifts in the world we live in. If the notoriously boisterous Americans are asleep at their own wheel. Where does that leave us.
DO IT YA COWARD
Says the two-faced, Trump-loving, corrupt, self-serving little fascist.
Alternate source: Ford doubles down on threat to cut off energy to U.S. amid spectre of trade war
When Ford triggered the election in late January, he appealed to voters for the “largest mandate in Ontario’s history” to help his government navigate four years of the Trump administration.
The PCs picked up 80 seats — a sizeable majority of 17, but only one more than at dissolution and three fewer than they won in 2022.
Despite the result and costly price tag, Ford said Monday the election was “100 per cent” worth it.
Well… yeah. He got a Superbowl ad for himself during an international crisis. He got to be CanadaMan on the world stage. Ontario having to shell out for our second provincial election in 3 years is a small price to pay.

Does Anyone still believe anything that a Ford brother says?
Prove it!
Yeah prove it. He already did the starlink contract stunt. So his words are wind.
I agree. Do it or shut up
Turn it off then make them pay a shit ton to turn it back on cuz they “don’t need it”
Only cut it off to Red States. Only cut it off for Republican registered customers and businesses.
Except that the power grid doesn’t work that way.
And funny enough, neither does Doug Ford!
Can he even do that?
I would assume not. The grids, except for Texas and some of Alasaka IIRC, are all fairly interconnected and share a lot. I’m assuming it comes in to some point over the border and enters the broader grid. Maybe it would be possible if it enters in multiple states to cut individual states off (which would still likely impact neighbors), but I don’t know anything for sure.
I can understand the sentiment, and I was all for it when this whole mess started, but now I think this is a terrible idea. Trump is insane and desperate, his deals are falling through and he’s desperate for a win. Giving him an excuse to call us the bad guys and escalating his actions won’t help anyone.
I agree we need to hit back, but we need to be careful in how we do it.
I cant see this happening. Cutting power exports would sure hurt the us citizens but it would also hit canadians just as bad. Not getting paid for power would be a huge hit for us. I could see some tarrifs being placed on power but not fully cut. Plus ford is a goof and i dont trust a word he says…
Yeah, well we couldn’t see tariffs happening either. Get ready for a whole lot of radical decisions in the wake of US fascism. Remember they chose this.
Power sector is certain to be saved from bankruptcy if somehow that was threatened. Sure, increasing export tariffs to 100% or 200% is a better response than cutting them off.
Overall export tariffs is the best option to raise revenue without adding to inflation for Canadians.
