Craig Mokhiber, the Director of the New York Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, has resigned from his position in protest against the organization’s failure to stop Israel’s genocide of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
He is retiring in a few days because that is the scheduled date of his retirement. He used this opportunity to voice his opinion one last time, which is fair. But he is not retiring “at this date as of protest”. That would be called resigning and he is not doing that.
I thank you, High Commissioner, Volker, for hearing this final appeal from my desk. I will leave the Office in a few days for the last time, after more than three decades of service. But please do not hesitate to reach out if I can be of assistance in the future.
