then de-federated after having essentially all users.

Thing is, they always had all the users.

I was around for this as a user. I had (and still have them) people in my Jabber friend list (obviously all computer science students), then google came (and later Facebook), and I could add a few more and stop using Google/FB messengers. Then they defederated, and I lost literally none of the people I had before, because no-one who wanted to use Jabber stopped using it, no one who was temporarily federated cared about anything but using Google/Facebook messengers.

there is no negativity on the fediverse yet

Hard disagree. The toxicity and personal attacks just from beehaw defederating two instances was already insane. And there are many smaller instances of negativity on Lemmy. I’m assuming there’s even more on Mastodon, but I have no interest in microblogging, so that’s just a guess.

Or talking in threads like these, having the terrible opinion that talking isn’t terrible, even when talking to Meta.

I wouldn’t call the discussions in this thread toxic, though. There are simply different viewpoints, some people are rather strict in their rejection of Meta’s advances, and others (such as you) call for more open-mindedness.

There’s simply no comparison to the name calling and other bs frequently found on Facebook, Reddit etc. Of course the Fediverse isn’t immune to that, but I think we’re doing rather well atm.

I did not mean to imply they are not. This was simple the single biggest outpouring of toxicity I had seen, so far. I have a very low opinion of humanity, so it’s not as if I expect any one group to be better.
