Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn’t the thing that makes a social media site, it’s the engagement

So even if you’re used to lurking, try to get a little more active! Post memes, vote on posts, talk in the comments, whatever!

If people come here and see activity, content, and discussions, they’re more likely to stay and contribute their own - if they come and see a ghost town, they’ll just go back to reddit

I was searching for Reddit alternatives and found a rather long list that included which were open source, federated, had apps, etc. and that’s where I first heard about Lemmy. As I was browsing the different sites I found additional people talking about Lemmy specifically and that got me to research further and eventually join.

It was recommended to me over Reddit as well. As I said in another comment, I’ve dabbled with Mastodon as well but I think I may like Lemmy more

this has been one reason for the “nuke your content, keep your account” idea. whenever you feel the urge hop back onto reddit and gently and politely drop the fact that Lemmy exists.

but honestly, do whatever works for you and keeps you engaged in user centric federated social.

That’s precisely how I ended up here as well.

Also, thanks for commenting in a way that encourages further discussion! I think that matches the spirit of OP well.

I am hoping to see more communities spring up here over the next while, but so worry a bit about fragmentation of communities.

What sorts of communities are you participating in or looking for here?

Well, I do like to join communities that align with my hobbies. I just joined the biking, tech and my sports team communtiy. What I’ve liked the most is to see how other communities that I would’ve never thought I would join have interesting content here in Lemmy! Hope to see more of that. How about you?

I feel that’s a lot of us. I do have hobbies and interests such as mechanical keyboards, various games, technology, etc. that Is like to find communities for, but I also used Reddit heavily for work-related research (I’m an IT systems administrator) and there were some fantastic technical communities on Reddit. Hoping to see those spring up here as well.

Also, this is my first comment reply, and unless I’m missing something, it’s wildly inconvenient in the Jerboa app to respond to comments since you can’t just tap the reply in your inbox to go to the response to your comment. Hopefully that gets fixed/added!

Yeah, I am logging into my computer just to reply to your comment. That would be amazing, because there are a lot of niche topics and discussions that I am always interested in. I am learning about Linux servers, docker and python and Reddit has been a great resource. Hope to see those here too :D

So I found in another post…

If you press and hold on the vote count of the comment in your inbox, it opens a pop-up where you can click the link icon to go to the context among other actions.
