In medieval England it was trendy to make nicknames by rhyming with a shortened form
Robert -> Rob -> Bob
Richard -> Rick -> Dick
Margaret -> Meg -> Peg
William -> Will -> Bill
All being pretty common examples. This was covered pretty early on in the excellent History of English Podcast
