I’ve been told about Mull and fennec, but what about:
(From what I understand)
- Firefox Focus: blocks trackers and erases browsing history
- Firefox Nightly: new updates every night
- Firefox Klar: german version of focus
- Iceraven Browser: 3rd party fork with more add ons
Firefox just added addon support officially on mobile. All other firefox browsers that enabled them in the past do not differ in this regard anymore.
Focus and klar are the same with a diffrrent name: wtf firefox? It’s a very lightweight, very fast browser which enhances privacy a little bit, especially locally.
Nightly is the developer version of firefox if you want to help firefox and discover bugs use it, you won’t experience many bugs though. Unless you really use the latest features. There may be other bugs though, use at your own risk.
For the serious privacy minded person you should use mull or at least fennec. If mull is too hardened for you, you can soften it again by disabling the settings.
Mobile add-ons. Nice!
Thanks for that!
On January 25, 2016, Mozilla announced in its press blog that the Firefox Focus web browser will be called Firefox Klar in German-speaking countries. The reason for this is that the publishing and media group Burda, which owns the magazine Focus, is a partner of Mozilla. (Wikipedia)
If it aint broke, don’t fix it, and mull works very well. While it’s nice to see alts becoming more widely available, it’s still mull or bust in my book!
Mull would be perfect if it weren’t for the stuttery scrolling. It doesn’t refresh the screen as quickly as Firefox for some reason.
If Firefox focus Android has user-friendly tab management, it’ll be my main browser. Its native ad blocker is 👍. 1 may say that there’s Firefox Android + Ublock origin. But I <3 Firefox and I’m :) they have a native ad blocker.
Firefox focus also has the epic feature of not being able to add new bookmarks for some goddamn reason and also needing to close the app if the webpage doesn’t let you scroll up.
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!
Firefox Focus is an Android browser that’s always in Private Browsing mode, and has tracker blocking and content blocking built-in. It does not have all of the advanced features of the regular Firefox app.
Firefox Nightly is the cutting-edge development version of Firefox. This is built from the latest codebase automatically on a nightly base, as the name implies. If you want the newest features ASAP and don’t care about bugs or stability issues, this is the one for you. Personally I would recommend using Firefox Beta instead, which sits in the middle – more tested than Nightly, more cutting-edge than regular Firefox.
Firefox Klar is the German-language version of Firefox Focus. I think the only technical difference is that it has telemetry disabled by default. (You can turn that off in Firefox Focus as well, under Settings > Privacy & Security).
Never heard of Iceraven before. Apparently it’s a fork of Mozilla’s development version of a new Android app codenamed Fenix. Hopefully someone else can chime in with more insight into these two.
Given Germany has some of the strictest privacy laws, I’m betting Klar is the honest version of focus. The fact that both exist separately makes me question Firefox’s commitment to privacy.
Looks sus.
One of their partners in that region already established a brand under the same name.
From https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/difference-between-firefox-focus-and-firefox-klar
Klar by Firefox is the German-language version and only available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. It includes the same features as the English-language app Focus by Firefox.
Why did we change the name/replace the app?
The publishing and media company Burda, which the news magazine FOCUS belongs to in Germany, is one of our partners. We therefore decided to replace our app “Focus by Firefox” in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland by “Klar by Firefox”.
If you think it is suspicious you should be able to spot it in the open source repository. Otherwise see the other, and probably only, reason for the different name.
Oh simple, I just have to go through every line of code - so simple! /s
No, because they should be pretty much identical the only difference should be the name.
Just the name is different, since a german news magazine already claims the name “fokus”. Mozilla was forced to rename its browser because of that
