I’d like to set up and federate an instance of Lemmy with the purpose of inviting friends and family. I imagine that they’d appreciate having spaces limited to family members where posting information or photos wouldn’t erode their anonymity elsewhere in the fediverse.

Is there a way to make some communities private so that only those who are invited can view or post within them?

When searching, I only see one mention of private communities as a feature that isn’t finished. But, that post appears to be 3 years old.

Thanks so much! I’m really enjoying the community here.

I believe the closest you can do at the moment is make a community moderators only, and then make the people you want moderators of that community. That isn’t really what you want though, because everyone can still read it.

Thanks for the info, Ada! That’s helpful.

I feel like it would be a well-used feature, if it was added. From that post I linked, it seems to have been been given some consideration, at least.

The main issue is that lemmy is basically just 2 devs trying to work around their own lives, jobs and running this instance. Now that more attention is coming to lemmy, it will be interesting to see if they start to get more devs offering their changes to the project

Yea. I wonder how much they will want to play with others.

I have no reason to think this is the case, and it’s not even a criticism, not at all. It’s just that sometimes people just want to work on their project and aren’t too interested in scaling up in the same way that mastodon has for instance.

General point being that it might sense for some people to make a friendly fork. Not for the sake of doing so but because it might help the ecosystem, especially if it’s friendly.

Message being to anyone with the skill and will they can see themselves forming a large team, if you find the pull request proceed and dependence on the current core devs too limiting, go ahead and work. We can all be collaborative and friendly here.

There is an open issue about this, donate or maybe set up a bounty in rysolv to increase the chances of this happening.
