Machinist@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Should you copy a person's accent when pronouncing their name?English3·24 days agoHe sounds like a pretty awesome dude. Thanks for sharing. Also sounds like he has you pretty well trained, he gets to ride and sniff.
We don’t have a small dog right now, our elderly Chihuahua reached the end a couple years ago and my wife is still raw.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto RetroGaming@lemmy.world•Can someone find a redeeming factor about this game? Like anything good about it.English3·25 days agoI never really figured out you had to drive as fast as possible and that the fuel level was actually a countdown timer. I was crazy about the cartoon and remember being so disappointed with the game.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Should you copy a person's accent when pronouncing their name?English4·25 days agoThat’s really funny to me. What was his name and what was he like?
This is actually wisdom. I use a 4x fudge factor.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Florida to end vaccine mandates for children as state’s surgeon general likens them to ‘slavery’English2·2 months agoThere really is no one in control. Not really. There are people and groups with spheres of influence and power. I wish there was an evil illuminati out there in control of things, at least it would be organized.
Best I can figure, most everyone is faking it. I’ve spent time with CEOs, military officers, rich people, big time evangelists. They’re mostly faking it, some even feel imposter syndrome like normal people do.
This isn’t to say that they don’t perpetrate great evil, but they’re also not superhuman or super intelligent. Many of them are of average intelligence at best. They’re just lucky or lack morals as we know them, reframing their moral system to excuse their actions. Everyone is the hero of their own story even when they are corrupt to the core. Hitler was a dog lover and vegetarian.
All this to say, there is no silver bullet for cancer. There is no magic carburator invented in the '70s that gets 100mpg. There is no over unity generator that will provide free power. Somebody would steal those secrets and sell them for millions.
I half expect that the insurance companies will run the numbers on end of life costs and maintenance costs of disability and still cover the standard schedule of vaccines. Deaths/crippling get expensive enough and they may even require vaccinations to keep insurance.
The wingnuts in question here likely believe the antivaxx shit, or see enough politcal advantage in parroting it that it has resulted in this. In some sense, the GOP has been too successful, now they are married to the lunatic fringe and have members from that fringe. They’re stuck on this ride as well. Hope they choke on it.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Florida to end vaccine mandates for children as state’s surgeon general likens them to ‘slavery’English5·2 months agoA conspiracy like that would require a level of organization that isn’t present.
It’s willful ignorance and cultic tribalism gone real bad.
They really believe there is a vaccine conspiracy that causes autism and is being used for mind control or whatever.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Florida to end vaccine mandates for children as state’s surgeon general likens them to ‘slavery’English29·2 months agoJesus fucking a goat.
If this goes on for long there will be so many dead or crippled children. So many dead people. It won’t stay constrained to Florida. This will put immunocompromised people at risk all over the country. Herd immunity is fucked.
Also, if it lasts long, expect other willfully ignorant states to do the same.
Fuck, I’m tired.

Machinist@lemmy.worldto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the largest labor uprising in history: The Battle of Blair Mountain, when the US military was deployed against 10,000 WV coal minersEnglish3·2 months agoAgain, intellectually, I get it. I’d read about Nazi Blood Libel, Mao and the Great Leap Forward, the Khemr Rouge, Rwanada, and so on. It’s just difficult to comprehend when you see it happen all around you.
As for myself falling for transparent propaganda, it’s possible but unlikely. I think it’s likely that I’m somewhat immune to it at this point. Religion, politics, hatred of outgroups are the main levers used and I’ve pretty much had that burnt out of me. I have a finely honed bullshit detector. I can certainly be tricked, at least for a time. However, I believe in so little, at this point, that I think it would be pretty difficult to uncouple my reality from the real world.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the largest labor uprising in history: The Battle of Blair Mountain, when the US military was deployed against 10,000 WV coal minersEnglish4·2 months agoThat was a forgiveable mistake the first time around. Howver, the insanity and utter bullshit I saw during COVID was not so forgiveable. And then, electing him a second time? I don’t think there’s any way back.
It’s such transparent propaganda, it will probably always astound me that people were so easily fooled. Pepple I thought were intelligent, wise, and that I respected. The Qanon stuff, the COVID conspiracy stuff, antivax, climate change. They have ended up in a false reality that most will never escape, and it was so obviously a lie. I’m still in a mild state of shock from time to time, I still grieve it.
Intellectually I know how it happened, but my gut cannot make sense of how they fell for it.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the largest labor uprising in history: The Battle of Blair Mountain, when the US military was deployed against 10,000 WV coal minersEnglish19·2 months agoNot who you were replying to. I have sort of similar roots, angst, and anger. My grandparents grew up sharecroppers, entire extended family are fundamentalists.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with being ignorant. It’s just a matter of education. Willfull ignorance, on the other hand, is the greatest sin.
The part I still can’t wrap my head around is falling for a New York, city slicker, orange ass, conman. My people used to dislike cops, hate the government, guns were just a fun tool for farm and hunting, and were suspicious of military jingoism and flag waving.
I wasn’t able to get a single friend or family member to see how they were being manipulated, how they were changing. I changed some, especially when I lost the religion, but I feel like I’m closer to our roots than they are. It’s profoundly alienating. I hate my own people a lot of the time. I’m so angry at them for fucking falling for such transparent bullshit. Fuck the evil bastards that lied them into it.

Machinist@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Republican election chief accused of slipping MDMA, cocaine into granddaughters’ ice creamEnglish21·2 months ago@lightnsfw@reddthat.com is making sense here. Throw the book at him and maybe have a psych eval done. Republican, so might as well check his computer for child porn.
That being said, spiking a kids ice cream with ecstasy pills makes no sense. It tastes awful, they would be hard to chew and an obvious foreign object in ice cream. If the girls didn’t OD, they’d be bouncing off the walls.
I could see someone that doesn’t actually know anything about drugs thinking this is a good way to frame someone. In reality, Drugs Are Really Expensive, as well as MDMA users/dealers generally not being willing to hurt children for nothing.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Republican election chief accused of slipping MDMA, cocaine into granddaughters’ ice creamEnglish4·2 months agoI remeber that one. Also, Richard Gere and the hamster, Marilyn Manson and the rib. The satanic panic about D&D and metal played backwards.

Machinist@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what questions do you have but don't feel you can ask trans people?English3·2 months agoThat’s pretty much what I figured. Wish trans folks had something like the old school hanky code.
As far as my preferences go, I was in a triad for a while with an NB. If I were stuck on a desert island and had to pick between a vanilla woman or a sub boy, I’m picking the boy. However, like I said, I have a strong preference for female genitalia. The whole tomboy/NB thing is the sweetspot for me in this spectrum.
I also have smell preferences. MtF, many NB, and cis women smell much more attractive to me. I imagine it’s related to test levels. I don’t find heavily transitioned FtM very attractive. There’s an androgynous smell that’s kind of like fallen leaves that I really like.
Not trying to fetishize here, but thought the perspective might be interesting. I’m very masculine and fall somewhere between a wolf or bear.
Machinist@lemmy.worldto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•what questions do you have but don't feel you can ask trans people?English1·2 months agoAs far as I know, pup/petplay is an outgrowth of queer male leather with leather pups being the prototype. Ponyplay has similar roots, probably a little more tradionally het. A fair amount of it, especially in porn, is just female submissive cishet roleplay. There is also overlap with furries.
It is relatively common in the straight-ish kink and leather communties in the US. There are leather pups all over gay leather. I can’t speak to the lesbian communties.
If you’re in the US, get involved with your local bdsm/kink community. Saw a girl come out as a hu-cow for the first time at a recent event.
Might think about taking a break for a while. I have to, sometimes. Do some camping and mostly unplug. Anything real big goes down and you’ll hear about it.
Marathon, not a sprint. Fuck em, we’re harder. Country boy can survive.
