There are way too many people in this comments section who are thoroughly committed to snatching defeat from the jaws of this good development or finding a way to fit it into their totally counterfactual way of looking at US law enforcement.

I’ve interacted with US cops from a lot of different POVs, from having friends who were victimized by the old school of corrupt US policing, to having friends-of-friends who were both cops and criminals, to a little interaction with the system myself. This reductive bullshit helps no one. Here’s how I see it: Pretty much any group of people that you give power to without checking up on them is going to abuse it. That was US policing for many many years, until in the pretty recent past we actually started making serious efforts to punish bad behavior by the cops, and look at that, they got a lot more reasonable. Pretty much every instance where some cop did something heinously fucked up, in the last few years, has followed up by them not just getting fired but brought up on charges. It hasn’t stopped, because they are human and there will always be “bad people” in the world, but it’s not this wild street gang loose on the streets like it used to be.

(Well, mostly. Institutional corruption can keep some particular agencies corrupt for a long long time. NYPD and LASD are probably the worst that I’m aware of in that regard, and I’m sure there are some small town departments that are fucking horror shows. And they usually see protestors as “the enemy” which sure isn’t fuckin great, I can talk more about that too. But what I am trying to say is that they’re not the cartoon villains that almost everyone on the left seems to habitually get all unanimous about them being.)

I have no idea how far it’ll go. Historically, Chicago was a pretty corrupt department and I have no idea whether they have gotten better (and I can absolutely guarantee that there are some individual Chicago cops who would rather be ICE right now and play-act as them any time they have a chance.) But if they’re beefing with ICE, then good for them. It’s that simple, and I have no idea why people are trying to say any different.

Seriously. Go after the people who did crimes, make a big public push to impeach the dirty judges, and make sure to bring grocery prices down instead of pushing up wages. If he’d done that, maybe it would have partly worked, maybe it would have been tough, but I think pretty fantastic odds that however it shook out, Biden would be out there drooling his way through his second term right now, and Fox News would be screaming about what a problem it was every time he tripped going up the stairs, but there are lot of Florida detainees who would still be alive. Kilmar would still be happy with his family, right now.

And then, the “reward” we would have gotten would have been someone competent in charge of all this horrifying stuff.

You want terror? It would already be packed up by now. The Democrats would be an illegal party, I think, and the paramilitary would already be semi controlling a lot of the streets, instead of doing such a good job at pissing people off and looking like the bad guys as they are doing now. It is still very very dangerous. But we are very lucky that Trump is in charge of it all.

Like a lot of things, it works best when you can’t really consciously tell that it’s there.

An animation that’s too quick to really register is fulfilling the brief and making the interface better, without cluttering up the user’s conscious awareness. An animation that wants to slow down enough so that you can really feel that the designer put some work into this interface, and appreciate what genius they are, is no good.

Not to mention working on saving the oceans, cleaning up all the PFAS, reducing the impact of global warming, all this stuff. There is an absolute shitload of work that needs to be done that needs a massive amount of effort and manpower. This idea “well how are we going to create jobs when AI can do everything and we have enough web marketers I guess” is looking at the working world through the entirely wrong lens.

Yeah. I kind of hesitated to post it for exactly that reason. It is not really exactly the take that I would have taken to any of what it is talking about. I do think some of the underlying facts are important and so I posted it anyway, but I do pretty much agree.

Specifically I think a lot more of what is happening is that “powerful” jobs are going away, and “underclass” jobs are becoming more common, and he’s interpreting that as “male” and “female” jobs respectively.

I pretty much agree with this comment of yours. I have absolutely no reason why that would mean we have to continue to bicker. I do think that comment is pretty firmly in contradiction to your earlier statements (“King Arthur / Robin Hood”), but whatever, I see no profit at all in us having a dispute about that part of it.
