Via Rail is a complete disaster imo. They take the bad from air travel and bring it to rail. They act like their service is a premium luxury one, with huge numbers of staff per train, multiple checks of your tickets, etc.

One example of how bad their operations are (not to get into reliability which is a whole other problem) is that when arriving at a station they ask that you remain seated until the train is fully stopped, and then slowly help people get off. Contrast this with trains in Japan as an example, where the announcement says a stop is coming up soon, please be ready to get off as soon as the train doors are open.

In my opinion we don’t just need politicians riding Canadian trains. I want them to travel to Europe and Asia and then come back and suffer on via rail. It’s not just new dedicated tracks that are needed, it’s a complete restructure of the passenger experience!

No, it’s because you can trace at least some of this specific problem directly back to British imperial rule in the middle east.

I try to live by the rule of I would rather be alive than dead. Being “right” is no consolation when you’re in a hospital bed dying.

The same goes for cars and especially bikers. You may be right, but being right doesn’t stop the giant SUV next to you from flattening you.

I find the wait times have gone up as they prioritise both drive thru and delivery options ahead of people actually at the counter.

I mostly agree with this but more than shorter code I value readability, I would rather take 3 lines to be clear to any developer than use some obscure or easy to misunderstand structure to write it in 1.

If we exclude mixed economies and state capitalist countries we are left with basically looking at historic record so let’s do that.

There were recessions in 15the century England, not a capitalist economy at all! There was also a recession in Rome in 33 AD as well if you want to look back further. This is just from 5 minutes of googling.

It is not possible to have an economy that never contracts, just to have one where it happens nowhere near as frequently as our current systems and with far better outcomes for most people.

Honestly I can’t think of a single European language where it is the case. German, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, Basque… none of them sound like airplane.

1. Commute as part of working hours.
2. Reliable public transit, with the monthly pass paid by work.
3. Salary increase of at least 15%.

I feel all of these are relatively realistic and achievable by my workplace except for reliable public transit which is out of their hands. Thankfully they’re still remote first though there have been a few indications that this might change.

Most stores near me don’t let you use the self checkout with more than a basket, but then they will not have anyone at any of the normal checkouts while having 3-4 employees just chilling “watching” the self checkouts.

Exact same situation, and I’m slowly converting my money over to different ETFs that are pulling me back positive.
