Nyssa Sylvatica@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Joann to shutter all 800 fabric stores after failing to find a buyer to save its locationsEnglish1·4 months agoI spoke to some crafters this morning after your comment and they strongly disagreed. They said that crafters that use fabric like cosplayers, quilters, sewers, and knitters use in-person retail for crafting supplies because ordering online is a gamble on quality and feel and online retailers don’t do returns because fabric is cut to order.
Nyssa Sylvatica@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Joann to shutter all 800 fabric stores after failing to find a buyer to save its locationsEnglish1·4 months agoTheir “business model” seemed so shitty because it was after they were obtained by private equity who loaded up the business with debt and stripped them down to bare bones to look better on paper and do an IPO (2021).
This is textbook private equity vulture capitalism. They even gave the CEO a half million dollar bonus the day before they filed for bankruptcy 😂

This is an amazing idea. I’ve toyed with the idea of creating both subject specific and geographic specific groups for my interests but it’s a clunky solution. For example, I like birdwatching, but I want to know what people are seeing around me, not on a continent away, so being able to join a centralized ‘birding’ group then narrow it down geographically would solve the problem of having to create potentially hundreds of sub groups. Same for politics, news, restaurants, etc.
Nyssa Sylvatica@lemmy.worldto News@lemmy.world•Sharks attack three swimmers off two Florida beachesEnglish11·1 year agoI’m east of these beaches this week on vacation. Is this related to the high water temperatures in the Gulf? Saw fish have been driven to strange behavior in southern Florida recently.

I don’t know the details on how the PEF got a majority but I imagine the passive investors were bought out and can’t imagine it took many employees to defect to produce the majority.
Nyssa Sylvatica@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If managers are so good at managing things, how come they can't manage to manage themselves?English5·1 year agoMyself and some other managers I know became managers for being competent at our science-based jobs when the company wanted to expand. Our education and career up until this point mostly had not involved learning skills like delegation, teaching, scheduling, and team-budgeting, not to mention the interactive social skills needed to successfully manage individuals.
Some bad managers are just good workers that weren’t able to suddenly learn these skills when their employer insisted they manage a team so it could pursue its endless quest for infinite growth by setting up hierarchies of workers. Good managers are either trained in management or extraordinarily talented.

Nyssa Sylvatica@lemmy.worldto Today I Learned (TIL)@lemmy.ca•TIL that horses went extinct in North America about 10,000 years ago. They were then reintroduced to the continent by the Spanish as early as the 1550s.English34·1 year agoI’ve heard some indigenous people say that horses never went extinct in North America pointing to the fact that although Spanish horses were released in NA in the 16th century, 17th century European explorers documented great plains tribes with advanced horse cultures which would be hard to attribute to a handful of releases from the 16th century expeditions.
