  • I am just so underwhelmed by most games these days that I’ve stopped buying them. I didn’t play BG3 until someone bought it for me as a gift, and then I really enjoyed the shit out of it. It probably made it even more fun that I didn’t plan to play it and had very low expectations. So I guess that’s part of the fun for me now - waiting for a sale or free game and hoping that it’s better than I imagine it to be.

  • It’s extremely clear to me that hexbear is a Russian propaganda tool. The twisted logic they employ and the over willingness of the users to spend lots of time pushing a narrative has made it all too obvious. I sincerely hope no one else falls into that trap through the fediverse. It needs to be defederated.

I’ve witnessed friends who got into the alternative news/Q Anon shit similarly start to fully believe the propaganda. They parrot all the Russian talking points about Ukraine and believe Trump is the only one who can save the country from oblivion. They think they’re hearing insider information, that it’s the actual truth, and the media does nothing but lie. It’s attractive because they think they’re getting secretive truth that most other people aren’t hearing. They’re getting bullshit.

The Russian war on hearts and minds is going swimmingly well for them. They’ve gotten fascists elected all over the world. It is time for their targets to wake up from their drug induced haze and recognize the true reality of the situation.

  • Ender’s Game was prescient text, regardless of Orson Scott Card’s personal beliefs.

Locke and Demosthenes are now armies of manipulative bots (but often real humans), shaping political discourse throughout the world. The Internet gave mind control powers to people with money, ambition, or both. We saw it with the Bernie Sanders and Trump movements in 2016 on Reddit, all too clearly for those who lived through an era where bullshit detection was a critical skill.

I was once fairly defeatist on this subject: the bad guys won, got Trump elected, and kicked off a new era of 80s conservatism that demonized progressive values like environmental conservation, freedom of choice in a number of matters, and equality.

But now, I’m starting to see young people stand up to their boomer relatives at Thanksgiving and bring facts and logic to social media discussions. And I have regained some hope that we will once again find a way to make the progressive “line go up“. Our society seems to swing like a pendulum between the right and left, over decades, and it feels like the Trump era was a swing too violent for most of us. It’s time to swing back.
