I agree. My first reaction when it broke about them blocking news was ‘I don’t see them or use them as a news aggregator anyway, so who cares’; let them take their click bait promotion and dwell time algorithms elsewhere.

That (wilful?) cognitive dissonance is very widespread unfortunately.
I am having a hard time trying to get an investment advisor (of all people) to understand that these assets will be stranded, and I do not want any money getting close to them. All I get back is things like ‘lovely sunny day’, ‘they’re not that bad’, ‘you can have some fun with climate investing’ (all quotes).
Exasperating.
I had an idea around a new Balfour Declaration for ‘right-leaning political parties’ and a nice blue home for them. I can think of many candidates.
But I do not want to appear to be trolling. So I won’t post it.
To be controversial, it’s not obvious to me that in private Trudeau has to be nice & polite with Smith:
- Libs and NDP I think have no federal MPs from AB (someone correct me if I’m wrong please)
- there are many charts that show Canada’s GHG performance to date is absolutely terrible compared to the rest of the G7
- likewise there’s plenty of data that the GHG performance for other than AB is in line with average G7
- polling across Canada (I believe) shows decent (~60%?) support for decisive action on climate change
So, it seems to me there’s a reasonably strong position along the lines of “get with the program Danielle, look at these charts, your private industry is trying to go in the right direction and is held back by you and your fossil interests. Oh, you say ‘blah blah blah Alberta sovereignty’? Go ahead, make my day”.
On a lighter note, anyone taking bets on whether they will [try to] shake hands?

Anyone know how these rules will actually work? For example, will link aggregation sites like… lemmy be a target? Legally, how does one insert a boundary between news in google search and (say) a community like CanadaPolitics or WorldNews in lemmy? Yikes!

The NDP are putting pressure on the Liberals to give this some teeth (same link as in CBC article), and because of the Supply & Services Agt. which I think specifically mentions this, have some leverage as well.

Good. From the article the turn-down was Pathways Alliance, which is a fossil industry greenwashing lobby & advertising group. They are being investigated for false advertising.
