Canada@lemmy.ca•Canadian Muslims outraged as Quebec moves to ban religious symbols at schools, including hijab76·4 months ago“In Quebec, we made the decision that state and the religion are separate,” said Education Minister Bernard Drainville
What is religion anyway? Worshiping men (politicians) is okay, but worshiping Allah is not?
As someone else pointed out, even from a liberal pov, this is wrong as it is anti-freedom and anti-personal autonomy. Women should have the right to choose what to wear according such a philosophy. Using the unconvincing loophole of “but they were forced to wear hijab” to turn this into something pro-freedom/pro-autonomy hardly changes that fact.
It’s a dangerous path to take, as these politicians will not only step on Muslims’ rights, but also set a precedent that the government (a few elites) can dictate when people are wearing too much. It also undermines the entire notion of protecting women’s rights.
Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) should have been a red flag that Canada’s rulers are mildly deranged along with being morally bankrupt.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada proposes 100% tariffs on Tesla, I have an alternative: open the door to Chinese EVs1·4 months agoIt feels unrealistic. Remember EU’s DMA which targeted Apple’s app installation restrictions? That Act still has done nothing of value and Apple has so far given the EU a middle finger. Isn’t open sourcing Tesla a much bigger ask?
Laws must be enforceable, otherwise what’s the point…

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada proposes 100% tariffs on Tesla, I have an alternative: open the door to Chinese EVs4·4 months agoWith enough oversight, I can buy the safety part. Without rigid oversight, you may end up with self-igniting batteries. When it comes to security, America is a low bar.
There is also an ethical component to the critique of Chinese goods in general, which concerns the CCPs actions and policies. Let’s not ignore that.
My point was, China is not better than the US. I’m sure Canada can do better than that, if they cooperate with other countries.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Canada proposes 100% tariffs on Tesla, I have an alternative: open the door to Chinese EVs174·4 months agoBad idea. China isn’t better than the US, and their EVs are a safety and security risk in and of themselves.
I can imagine Canada being in a position to collaborate with friendly countries to develop a safe, secure and open alternative to Tesla and “CCP-mobiles”. If that becomes a reality, everyone benefits.

Reddit@lemmy.world•Reddit CEO signals subreddits requiring a subscription fee coming this year181·5 months agoReddit has been shit since 2014, some would argue since its inception. It never properly replaced serious forums that specialized on their own niche, like PC hardware, gossip, cars, or whatever. The subreddit replacements always felt like lower quality EVEN THOUGH Reddit mods are (in general) more trigger happy than those running proper forums. The astroturfing, the deception, the lack of respect for its users, the UX dark patterns, it has all been getting worse and worse. Some haven’t gotten the memo yet, that Reddit serves no one but itself, it’s a cancer.
dictionary
astroturfing = “Public relations tactic using fake grassroots movements” (used by, among others, corporations, politicians (remember the Trump 2016 campaign on Reddit?), and governments)
UX dark pattern = user experience dark pattern = “A dark pattern is a design feature that subtly encourages users to perform a specific action.” (like Reddit’s “Howdy paddner” error if you use a VPN so that they can de-anonymize you)
