Venezuelans go to the polls on Sunday against a backdrop of hope and fear in a presidential election that could end 25 years of socialist rule – if a free and fair vote is allowed.
Opinion polls suggest that the president Nicolás Maduro, 61, who is seeking his third term, could be defeated by the opposition coalition candidate, retired diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, 74.
But experts warn that it is one thing for González to gain more votes, and another is for him to be announced as winner by the National Electoral Council, which is aligned with Maduro’s government.
Independent observers describe this election as the most arbitrary in recent years, even by the standards of an authoritarian regime that started with Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez.
But experts warn that it is one thing for González to gain more votes, and another is for him to be announced as winner by the National Electoral Council, which is aligned with Maduro’s government.
Anyone with a brain knows this, but it demands stating out loud:
This is what Trump wanted from Pence on Jan 6. This is what the insurrectionists on the ground were trying to do on Jan 6. They were trying to invalidate a free and fair election.
Trump seems to be on a speedrun of saying all the wrong things this election cycle. I wonder if he’d openly endorse Maduro refusing to leave power
I’m sure that with a ballot designed to have all this photos of Maduro, it will be a fair election.
Ironic that voting for a party called “alliance for change” actually votes for Maduro. Change what?
They should’ve used a different picture of him for each one for maximum comedic effect.
Using the same picture is much funnier
There are huge reports of delays in polling stations where their past outcomes are not favorable to Maduro.
Additionally there’s a lingering mood of doubt over the unregulated assistance to vote where this hasn’t been requested, huge red flag to fairness and secrecy of votes.
Same as it ever was
Are we honestly expecting this election to be free and fair?
No. Western media and US government has done everything they can to overthrow Maduro numerous times
Shit’s pretty fucked up in Venezuela right now. If the elections were free and fair I doubt they’d need much from the US
Did you read the article. Every bit of news out of Venezuela is lies from the media and the government.
Ok, there are still a few airlines that fly into Caracas (many have pulled out). I’m sure that’s a coincidence though. You go there and let me know how it is.
I’m not saying I am a blind supporter of Maduro, I am just acknowledging that pretty much everything western media and the US government says and reports on Venezuela is a completely fabricated lie.
It’s an indisputable fact
So the opposite of everything we hear is actually true, and things are quite peachy in Venezuela? Ok, got it. Thank you for enlightening me! I’m sure all the migrants that made it up here will be thrilled to know they can go back home now
You’re very dense if that is your take. You also seem to lack an awareness of nuance as well as critical thinking skills.
Just as free and fair as the US where ultra wealthy and corporate donors pick noms and we just have to take the shit served to us.
More of this false equivalency shit. There can be different degrees of corruption and authoritarianism. See Russia and China.
Also: see the US.
There’s no point in even pretending that Russia, the place where “non-loyal” people regularly “fall out of windows”, has the same level of corruption as the USA other than to create muddled equivalencies and to simp for Russia.
Do you believe Trump lost his last election? Do you believe Putin won his?
Seems to me being able to pick an executive is a pretty good litmus test
Name a better pair than Venezuela appearing in the news roll and an election period looming near in a liberal state.
That’s not socialism . That’s a party getting the pockets full associated to foreign interests . At the cost of making poor everyone and having the elections completedly corrupted . Wait, most of all socialist governments in history did the same.
So is it socialist or authoritarian? They seem to be contradicting themselves.
It’s possible to be both. Socialism is an economic system and authoritarianism is a governing system.
You can mix and match all day long.
I can’t tell if you are serious (because I agree that there can be no true socialism without democratic legitimacy) or being a tankie by saying that e.g. stalinism, which most people including tankies consider socialist, was not authoritarian.
So Britains are finally tired of the monarchy?
I don’t think Maduro is going to go
if he loses, he said it himself.
