It’s a fundraiser to try and raise more money and support for public transit, bike, and walking infrastructure. It looks like the highway is shutdown during this event, the bikes aren’t competing with cars.

        Ooh! That’s awesome!

Where I live we just have bike roads pretty much everywhere. I’m moving to a different town that literally has bike roads connecting it to the neighbouring town 30 kilometres away. It’s so easy to take that infrastructure for granted, and I don’t think you quite realise it until you see people biking on the autobahn. My brain just goes “holy shit they’re gonna get minced.”

Cycling infrastructure in Sweden? That is not possible! Let’s be realistic: bicycles don’t work six months of the year when it is cold outside. Bicycle tracks can’t be plowed, winter tires don’t exist and people can’t wear warm clothing while riding a bike. Nobody ever leaves the house in winter unless they are safely surrounded by a big metal box with an air conditioner attached to it.

…or at least those are the reasons I’ve heard that explain why we can’t have better cycling infrastructure in Canada.

I was never super fond of biking in the winter. There are definitely plenty of people biking year round though! If the option is there people will use it.

It’s okay on regular roads here, not on the autobahn though. Though most of the time there are already bike roads so it’s not really necessary to have. This road for example connects two towns across 33 kilometres. I don’t know if anyone actually commutes by bike with that though, but it’s definitely there as an option.

I’m definitely looking forward to taking the dog for some rides at least partway down that road come next year. There’s plenty of little break spots, offshoots into forests, and bathing areas to check out.

I worked with a guy who would ride from the suburbs into Chicago. I’m not sure the route he took, if he rode on the roads or there was a path somewhere.

Normal roads allow bikes, though some are safer than others. The freeway or tollways (likely equivalent to the autobahn) are the roads which don’t allow bikes.
