This is being posted all over the Fediverse, and it’s worth a look ourselves. Beware federating with corporate entities like Meta, because it inevitably comes with a poison pill designed to disadvantage independent actors like us.

I don’t know if those rumours have a grain of truth, if it is even possible for Meta to consider it. But there’s one thing my own experience with XMPP and OOXML taught me: if Meta joins the Fediverse, Meta will be the only one winning. In fact, reactions show that they are already winning: the Fediverse is split between blocking Meta or not. If that happens, this would mean a fragmented, frustrating two-tier fediverse with little appeal for newcomers.

Meta can eat shit, it is unbelievable that the big monopolies always have to spoil everything good.

    Thanks for sharing.

Real shame regarding what happened with XMPP. There’s no business case for a corporate entity to support a free, open communications protocol that has no path or potential to monetise.

They’ll just introduce propietary features that don’t support federation to move users over into their walled garden, similar to Apple’s approach with iMessage.

To me the decision is clear - Meta (and other massive corporate entities reliant on monetising their users) should not be embraced by the fediverse. Project 92 in particular looks like an attempt to siphon off Mastodon market share and potential users… really doubt anything good will come out of working with them
